The Christmas holidays are fast approaching, a time for festivities and celebration. But how do they celebrate Christmas in England? Elizabeth, our English conversation assistant, has been working with 4°ESO explaining the different traditions and ways in which British people celebrate Christmas and New Year in the United Kingdom. Elizabeth did a presentation with photos from England describing the history of Christmas, special festive days, food, traditional decorations and parties from her country, and we were able to see how it differs from Spanish Christmas.
Here you have some of the students’ opinions about this activity:Last week, the students of fourth course did an investigation about the Christmas in other countries. First, Elisabeth came to our class, and she told us some things about the Christmas in her country, England. Then we did the same. In groups we chose a country and secondly, we talked to our classmates about Christmas in this country. We investigated about the typical food, the decorations, the special days and we found some curiosities too. Our group chose Mexico. It was a very interesting experience because you can know other ways to celebrate Christmas and it can teach us other ways to live different to ours. Also, you can understand better other cultures. (Elena Arranz and Lucía Domínguez)
This job has been interesting because I have learnt many things I didn’t know such as the Christmas tree represents the Holy Trinity, or that Christmas candles represent success and prosperity. This work has been very useful to improve our pronunciation in English. What’s more, this activity has been funny and interesting because we have investigated other cultures, other traditions… We chose Germany to speak about. It would be nice to do another job like this again! (Karol García)
This experience has been very interesting and we have learnt a lot about customs and Christmas traditions, meals, decorations and culture of each country. This presentation consisted on explaining our information about a country by heart. Elisabeth, native of Manchester, also explained us the way she lives Christmas with her family at her home: her costumes and traditions. Our personal opinion is that it has been an entertaining lesson because we have compared Spanish Christmas with Christmas around the world. We should do this all the courses for learning the Christmas time in the entire world. (Eduardo Pomares Saenz De Santa María & Jorge Muñoz Nieto).
We are going to discuss about our experience of doing this English activity. First of all, Elisabeth, the speaking assistant, came to our class and she told us some curiosities about Christmas in England, her country. She also showed us typical English Christmas’ food and decorations. After the presentation she asked some questions. We had to do a similar activity but about a different country. We chose Mexico. We think the activity has been very interesting because we have learnt how Christmas is in other cultures while we have been speaking and listening English language. We hope we will do more activities like this to improve our English pronunciation. (Lucía Negueruela & Claudia García).
The pupils of 4ºA did an activity with Elisabeth in which she spoke Christmas traditions in her country. One week later, we did the same, telling our classmates the Christmas traditions in different countries.I think that it was a wonderful experience because now, I know a lot of things about different countries at Christmas and I enjoyed a lot. (Ana Garcés) Thank you, Elizabeth for motivating and rising our students’ interest about English.
